3 Keys to Working Out at Home

Finding the time to get your body in shape is such a challenge. Between the daily grind of commuting to work, wrestling with kids, cooking (and eating), paying the bills and keeping up a social life, getting room in there to make it to the gym might not make it to the top of the priority list very often.

That’s why so many people turn to home fitness training. For people at especially busy times in their life, working out at home saves them precious time. By the time lots of people get in their car and drive to the gym and back, they can crank out at least half of an at home fitness workout. Depending on how far away the gym is, you might even get a whole workout it during that time.

So what should you keep in mind when coming up with a home fitness plan? Consider these three things:

Make it reasonable: A lot of people start working out for the right reasons, but might not necessarily have the right goals in mind to start. Want to lose 50 pounds? That is fantastic. Unfortunately, it’s easy to lose momentum if you’ve only lost eight pounds and still have 42 to go! Set a goal of 10 pounds in a certain time period. Make it challenging for yourself, but keep in mind that once you lose those 10 pounds, that’s just your first step to losing another 10! So sometimes it’s good to break up your goals into smaller ones so you can celebrate your noteworthy milestones without losing steam.

Make it affordable: Unless you’ve done it before, working out at home — just like anything else — comes with some costs. It might be tempting to go down the rabbit hole and get yourself a yoga mat, workout gloves, new fitness clothes and shoes…the list goes on. Of course — prepare yourself for the challenge that lies ahead. Don’t have weights? You’ll probably need some of those. Are you a “look good, play good” type and want a new pair of sneakers to extra motivated? Nothing wrong with that at all. For a lot of people, though, working out at home is also a benefit since it doesn’t come with the added cost of a gym membership, so just be careful not to buy a Peleton on day one.

Make it a part of your routine: If you are committed to working out at home, one thing you’ll want to do is mark the time on your calendar for it. As with basically any other goal, if you write down what your fitness goals are, you are much more likely to achieve them. So maybe this means waking up earlier in the morning, or skipping a post-work activity one or two times as week — that will depend on your calendar. What’s most important is that you find regular time to work out at home in a way that allows you to feel good about yourself.

Keep these tips in mind and before long, you’ll be hitting those individual goals in the comfy confines of your own home one day at a time!
